The Alumni Spotlight page features accomplishments of the members of the NPIAP Alumni Council.

Grants

  • Alumna Barbara M. Bates-Jensen, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), School of Nursing, has been awarded more than $3 million for a new R01 grant by the National Institute of Nursing Research to conduct a 4-year pragmatic, multi-site study of pressure injuries in nursing homes. This study will be conducted across eight nursing homes and will examine the use of subepidermal moisture assessment results as a cue for nursing staff to initiate pressure injury prevention.

Honors

  • Alumni and Past President Elizabeth Ayello, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, CWON, ETN, FAAN has been selected to represent the NPIAP and serve as a member of the Guideline Governance Group as work begins on the 2024 International Guideline for the Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Injuries.
  • Alumni and Past President Elizabeth Ayello, PhD, MS, BSN, ETN, RN, CWON, MAPWCA, FAAN was honored with a Life Achievement Award at the World Union of Wound Healing Societies (WUWHS) in Abu Dhabi on March 2, 2022.  Congratulations, Dr. Ayello on this well-deserved recognition.

  • The Mideast Region of the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society hosted their annual fall conference in Lexington, KY September 22-24 and two NPIAP Alumni presented to those in attendance

  • The Hawaii Affiliate of the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society hosted their annual fall conference in Honolulu, HI on September 30, and a member of the NPIAP Alumni presented to those in attendance in the Wound Track

    Alumni and Past President Laurie McNichol MSN, RN, CNS, GNP, CWOCN, CWON-AP, FAAN  together with colleagues drove an initiative to have the CMS and the CDC approve new ICD 10-CM codes for Moisture associated skin damage. The codes became effective in the US on October 1, 2020 and are consistent with codes being used in countries using ICD 11. An introduction to the achievement followed by two manuscripts have been published pertaining to the new codes with Open Access and include guidance for their use. A third publication has been accepted for publication in the May/June issue of the Journal of Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing with McNichol as the lead author and will also be Open Access.
